Ethereal White Persian Pond

Persians captured my attention at Kew Gardens – shiny, transparent swirls of white hovering over dark pond water. Dale Chihuly calls my favourite installation the Ethereal White Persian Pond.

It is in the small greenhouse containing the tropical water lilies and the only one of his pieces that manages without colour. A botanically literate lily pond is transformed into a magical place.

Another beauiful Persian is this collection of glass bowls exhibited in the gallery space.

In a video, a busy and rather bossy Chihuly acts as something of a factory foreman. His huge pieces require thousands of parts to be hand blown by craftsmen and fitted together on steel structures – such as the huge, Medusa-like arrangement below:
